This program includes 60 clock hours of both classroom instruction and lab exercises that can be completed over a 5 week period. Classes are held on Monday through Thursday from 9am – 12 pm. This is a 3.5 month, 14 week program. The total cost of this program is $2,700 which includes the application fee, tuition and other additional fees.

This program will enable students to enter the health care field as an entry level Phlebotomy Technician. Training will prepare students to complete tasks such as collecting blood and bodily fluids, keeping records and verifying patient information. They will also be prepared to give instructions to patients, pick up specimens and collect drug screens as well as operate centrifuge and practice safety precautions.

Southwest Tennessee Community College

Southwest Tennessee Community College is located in Memphis, Tennessee and offers a Laboratory Phlebotomy Technician Technical program that can lead to certification in phlebotomy.

This is a two semester, 20 credit hour program. During the first semester students will complete 6 credit hours in an Orientation to Medical Laboratory and Phlebotomy course. The second semester will include a Phlebotomy Seminar and a Phlebotomy Clinical that will make up the additional 14 credit hours. These two semesters include classroom lecture as well as lab exercises. The clinical portion of the program will take place at a local clinical facility where students will gain hands-on practices in skin puncture, venipuncture, patient care and specimen handling and distribution.

In addition to paying tuition, students should be prepared to pay additional costs of $400-$800 for uniforms, physicals, lab fees, immunizations, graduation, certification and licensure fees.

Tennessee College of Applied Technology has several centers throughout the state of Tennessee that offer Phlebotomy training. Individuals can enroll in the Technology Center to become a certified phlebotomist in Nashville, Pulaski, Knoxville, Murfreesboro, Hartsville and Huntsville.

Courses for the phlebotomy program begin several times throughout the year. Students can complete the course in 2-3 months. Classes are generally offered in the evening from 5:30 – 8:30 on Tuesdays or on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Students will complete 40 hours of training that includes clinical skills and theory practice such as universal precautions, specimen requirements, laboratory policies, venipuncture and capillary punctures.

Upon successful completion of this program, students are eligible to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician examination. They will also be prepared to work as a Phlebotomist in the state of Tennessee without certification.
